Description

Money. Romance. Tragedy. Deception. The story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos is an unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong. How did the world's youngest self-made female billionaire lose it all in the blink of an eye? How did the woman once heralded as "the next Steve Jobs" find herself facing criminal charges -- to which she pleaded not guilty -- and up to 20 years in jail? How did her technology, meant to revolutionize healthcare, potentially put millions of patients at risk? And how did so many smart people get it so wrong along the way? ABC News chief business, technology and economics correspondent Rebecca Jarvis, along with producers Taylor Dunn and Victoria Thompson, take listeners on a journey that includes a three-year-long investigation. You'll hear exclusive interviews with former employees, investors, and patients, and for the first-time, the never-before-aired deposition testimony of Elizabeth Holmes, and those at the center of this story.

Myth-Making

Convinced of her own destiny even as a young child, she would come to drop out of Stanford in her late teens, intending to mold herself after the great tech icons of our time. Her obsession with Steve Jobs -- down to his signature black turtlenecks -- would become particularly pronounced as she launched her company Theranos.Support this podcast with a review: http://bit.ly/2REHEs9====================Recommended listening:-- No Limits with Rebecca Jarvis: Rebecca speaks to bold and influential women about their paths to success, their choices and tradeoffs along the way, and their pitfalls and lessons learned. A Star is Born
Elizabeth becomes a celebrity as Theranos breaks out of stealth mode and onto the main stage. The media can't get enough, and neither can many investors as Theranos Wellness Centers start popping up at Walgreens. To take advantage of the moment, Elizabeth spends millions on advertising, recruiting the same agency as Apple and even an Oscar-winning director. But real patients are now getting Theranos tests, and for some the results are shocking.Support this podcast with a review: http://bit.ly/2REHEs9====================Recommended listening:-- No Limits with Rebecca Jarvis: Rebecca speaks to bold and influential women about their paths to success, their choices and tradeoffs along the way, and their pitfalls and lessons learned. The Whistleblower
With Theranos technology now being used by real customers, many employees are at a breaking point. They are horrified by what they believe to be widespread deception and dangerous practices, but Theranos has implemented increasingly extreme measures to stop them from speaking out. As the threat of litigation lingers, one brave and unlikely whistleblower, with close ties to Elizabeth Holmes and the board of directors, emerges.Support this podcast with a review: http://bit.ly/2REHEs9====================Recommended listening:-- No Limits with Rebecca Jarvis: Rebecca speaks to bold and influential women about their paths to success, their choices and tradeoffs along the way, and their pitfalls and lessons learned. The Downfall
Elizabeth Holmes, once the darling of Silicon Valley, is under a different kind of spotlight. Now under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, she is forced to answer tough questions under oath. The claims that Elizabeth had been repeating over and over again to the public, investors, doctors and her board are under fire; the woman who once had all the answers, suddenly seems to have none. And for the first time, the lawyer for former Theranos COO, Sunny Balwani, speaks out, providing a glimpse into his defense. Ugh the take on this podcast is horrible. She was just an overly ambitious person who accidentally got in over her head and fooled "smart" people like Betsy DeVos??? Nothing about her life of privilege, nothing about her father's connection with Enron, nothing about these vulture corporations pulling this shit regularly? She's just a scammer like the rest.

what bothers me the most is, how is she just going about her life like nothing happened. She's about to get married? Are you freaking kidding me? This didn't even affect me and I'm super pissed...

CJ crazy story. It made me wonder how many so-call changemakers are just as horrible as #ElizabethHolmes . Ivy league schools + a silver tongue + a charming face = millions and millions dollars from no-time-for-investigating investors.

The synthetic interviews are very outputting. The reaction, "wow", to an obviously prerecorded conversation is too insincere.

Brooke Venning Too funny! I didn't even think of that but you're right. She probably realized school was a waste of her time after realizing she knew more than her professors... and why shouldn't she think so? Some of them were not drinking her koolaid... they were swimming in it.

this investor talking about how it would be presumptuous of this 20-something yr old girl who has no business background but her family USED to be in business and they have a hospital named after them so she magically has aptitude in both areas... 😂. Wtf? I'm pretty sure that, though you may inherit a degree of your parents' intelligence, you don't inherit talent for things that generally take quite a bit of education. 🙄

something that was not discussed well which is the big thing, is how she could persuade so many great minds that her hollow idea is really a true one? how nobody asked her tough questions like companies ask when they want to hire? can someone share their idea? it really scares me to see giants like Walgreens get fouled this easily.

Rob S I missed the original comment, I think it was deleted. Either way, so many people did want her to succeed because she is a woman in the tech space and it just blinded their judgment. Everyone had FOMO, afraid of missing the next Apple, so they just went along with it. Also, as long as she could fool one or two important people, then the rest followed. Sometimes the mentality of the crowd is wrong, but people feel safer when they see other smart people believing the story, and as in this case, everyone got duped.

Amy K it was / is about gender, partly. She used her gender to throw people off. Then she lied to cover the rest of the fraud. And, she wasn't alone in this but she started it and was the poster child for the company. If you listen to the podcast they point it out as well. Much of of the support she got was because she was female, young and breaking the tech mold and everyone wanted her to succeed. Investors took risks because of who she was and who they wanted her to be. Even Steve Jobs didn't get the sort of support she did when starting out. I don't think I said we should excuse anyone for fraud by gender. Do you? In the future you should do some research instead of reponding with emotion tainted by your preceptions of the world. I suppose if I was a woman and said the same thing it would be OK?
