6 Steps to Turn Your Blog into a Podcast


Ten years ago it would have been difficult to imagine that someone could actually make a living running a YouTube channel or a blog. And yet, here we are today, fiercely competing for a web audience. If you have managed to build a solid reputation in the blogosphere, maybe it’s time to supplement your written content with an audio podcast show. Due to its growing popularity, podcasting seems like the ideal choice as a next step. However, there are some elements you should keep in mind before repurposing your written content. Remember that your goal is to successfully engage and grow your audience.

STEP 1.  Making sure the blog is suitable — technically and content-wise — for podcasting

Ideally, you should opt for a self-hosted WordPress blog instead of a free provider platform. This is mainly because the available WordPress plugins for podcasting are easy to use and allow you to control many aspects including content delivery and feeds. STEP 2.  Repurposing your content for audio

Once you’ve opted for a suitable blog platform, it’s time to tackle the delicate issue of content. Although it may be high quality, not all written content is fit for audio. It would be wise to filter through your content and opt for those you deem worthy of converting into a podcast. You may also need to expand on your content since your blog post may be a shorter read than the standard minimum ten minutes allocated for podcasts. There are some other aspects of a podcast that should also be taken into consideration including your show’s format, whether or not you are going to have guests, and if you are covering a saturated niche.

STEP 3.  Creating the right script for your podcast

Once you know exactly what your podcast is going to be about, it’s time to write an intro script. STEP 5.  Submitting your RSS feed

Unlike a blog post that exists on your website, your RSS feed from your podcast needs to be distributed. You will need to submit it to a podcast player. First, you’ll want to make sure that you have at least 6 recordings. That way, you’ll have enough content to make your channel interesting to visitors. STEP 6.  Promote your podcast

  • Don’t be afraid to use your mailing list and social media accounts to promote your podcast.
  • Ask for positive reviews from family and friends
  • Interact with well-established podcasters and try to get their attention. If you promote them, they may return the favor

  • Join podcasting groups such as podcast movement to get industry tips, ideas and to answer podcast related question you may have.
