Description

Yuba County, California. February 24, 1978. Five men went to a basketball game in Chico, California to watch their favorite college basketball team play. They never returned home. Four days later their car was found on a Plumas National Forest access road. There was no sign of the men and no indication of why they had abandoned their operable car. In June, the remains of four of the five men were found even deeper in the forest. The fifth man remains missing. No one knows why they went into the forest. If it was voluntary or foul play was involved, or why they died when the trailer had enough supplies to allow them to survive until spring. This case is full of mystery. Join us as we attempt to sort out what happened to these five friends.

First off, I loved this episode. I also want to thank you because a lot of people don't handle the topic of schizophrenia delicately and like to paint people who have it out as monsters, but I think you two were very just in the way you discussed it. My mom struggles with schizoaffective disorder which has almost all of the symptoms experienced with schizophrenia except that it is accompanied by bipolar disorder. She has bouts of severe paranoia when she's off her medicine so I agree with your theory of Mathias being paranoid and scared whenever Shones called out for help. That lines up perfectly with what a lot of people go through when they have these bouts of psychosis. I wanted to add a little bit of personal anecdote but the paranoia is almost contagious at times, even if you have no mental health issues and even if you know that it is irrational. There is one specific time that my mom had me so absolutely convinced that my house was bugged even though I knew it was completely unfounded. Perhaps Mathias had been dealing with these feelings all day or for the past few weeks and it may have worn on them. Although we'll never be able to know for sure, I think that is a very fitting reason for them to have run away from the car or refuse to acknowledge Shones. Anyway, I love the podcast. Thanks again.

Kit /ten My mother also had the same disorder. For a long time, i thought all white cars around us were the government. The paranoia is contagious. she had me almost convinced...was a very difficult childhood for me growing up.
